A friendly greeting because you know we ALWAYS love to see you, but ‘Old Pal’ is also the name of this simple three-ingredient whiskey cocktail.

Created by world-famous bartender Harry MacElhone in Paris during the 1920s, it’s very closely related to another MacElhone invention – the Boulevardier.

Where the Boulevardier calls for bourbon and sweet vermouth, the Old Pal uses rye whiskey and dry vermouth. Traditionally made using equal measures of each ingredient, the recipe we’re using here increases the whiskey and uses less of the rest which makes for a boozier sip.

Try it both ways and let us know which you prefer!

It’s made for us here by one of our very own Old Pals – bartender Ryan Adair, AKA Instagram’s @curious_concoctions.

Were you familiar with this classic?

Recipe: –

45ml Rye Whiskey

15ml Dry Vermouth

15ml Bitter Liqueur

Stir all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled Nick and Nora glass.

Express the oils from an orange peel across the top of the drink, then garnish with an orange twist.
